Cosmetic Nurse Injector, Rachel Lawson, performs BOTOX® injections at our Kansas City MO area clinic for patients looking for an effective, non-surgical solution to facial wrinkles and fine lines.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the United States, with more than four-million procedures performed last year. BOTOX® is a synthesized protein used to treat fine lines and wrinkles in the face.
Approved by the American Food and Drug Administration in 2000, it has since gained a reputation as the safest and most effective cosmetic procedure practiced. Tiny injections of BOTOX® into targeted areas relax the muscles causing wrinkles, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. More About BOTOX®
Unlike most injectable treatments, BOTOX®, or botulinum toxin, is not a filler. Rather, it is a protein that blocks nerve impulses. When it is injected into muscles just below the skin, it temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. As a result, skin becomes smoother and refreshed-looking. This treatment can effectively soften frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet (wrinkles at the corners of the eyes) .
A BOTOX® injection causes little to no discomfort, and is generally tolerable without anesthetic. The injections may leave tiny red dots or very minor bruising, but both fade rapidly and can be concealed with makeup. After treatment, it is important to avoid lying down for five hours, and you should avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours. You can expect to begin seeing results within one week.
History Of BOTOX® Cosmetic
Though the deadly effects of botulinum toxin found in foods were what prompted the discovery of the protein in Germany in the 1820s, science soon began searching for ways to put its muscle-relaxing properties to therapeutic use. More than 100 years later, Dr. Alan B. Scott discovered that in small, purified doses, the protein could be used to treat crossed eyes, facial spasms, and vocal cord spasms.
The Food and Drug Administration approved botulinum toxin for these applications in 1989. In the 1990s, it was discovered that the protein temporarily cured excessive sweating and cerebral palsy. As research continued in this direction, doctors noticed wrinkles in their patients’ skin subsiding. As word spread of the botulinum toxin’s cosmetic benefits, Allergan, a global health care company, acquired Dr. Scott’s company and rechristened the protein “Botox.” It finally gained the FDA’s approval for use in cosmetic applications in 2002.
Risks Of BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a safe treatment that can yield outstanding results if you carefully adhere to your surgeon’s recommendations for activity following the procedure. The FDA warns that in rare instances—usually when the protein is administered to treat migraine headaches and muscle spasms—the protein can migrate to other parts of the body, paralyzing muscles used for breathing and swallowing, which can sometimes prove fatal. However, the FDA reports there are no confirmed cases of these effects occurring in cases of cosmetic use.
