What To Expect During Your Breast Reduction Recovery

Breast reduction surgery has helped countless women with overly large breasts find relief from discomfort and allowed them to achieve bust lines that are more proportionate to their overall figures. During this procedure, Dr. Madhukar Chhatre will remove fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts to diminish their size and weight. Dr. Chhatre remains committed to providing personal support and exceptional professional service to all patients before, during, and after their plastic surgery treatments, and he will share detailed instructions to ensure a successful breast reduction recovery. Immediately After Your Surgery

After your procedure is complete, you will remain in the surgical suite for a few hours so that we can monitor you closely. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings and bandages or a special surgical bra. Some patients will have drains inserted into each breast to help relieve excess blood and fluids. To support your recovery at home, you will be given specific post-surgical instructions before you leave. It is very important to follow these guidelines as closely as possible since they are designed to keep you safe and comfortable. A family member or friend will need to drive you home, and you should have someone around to help care for you during the next few days.

The First Week

Patients may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising after surgery, but these concerns can typically be treated with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication. While sleeping or resting, we recommended placing pillows under your upper back and head to keep the area elevated and relieve pressure. When you are feeling well enough, begin to take short walks to promote circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. However, you will need to avoid any strenuous activities, such as lifting, bending, straining, sex, and exercise, until Dr. Chhatre gives approval.

Weeks Two To Three

Most patients will have their stitches and sutures removed before the two week mark, roughly 10 days after surgery. At this time, the worst of the pain and swelling should have passed. Most women will return to work within two to three weeks after breast reduction surgery, so long as their jobs do not entail physical activity. It is important to continue to refrain from lifting objects over five pounds and any actions that put strain on the surgical area until you have Dr. Chhatre’s permission, even if you think you are feeling up to it.

Weeks Four To Six

Most patients are given the green light to resume all activities and tasks, including ones that are physically demanding, four to six weeks after their procedure. Swelling should reduce noticeably after the one month mark and continue to subside gradually over the course of the next few months.
