Latisse is the first and only FDA approved lash serum. This prescription product can only be sold by a medical office or pharmacy. Found from a medicated eye drop that was used to treat glaucoma. Many patients using this medication were having the side effect of longer, thicker and fuller lashes. This side effect led Allergan to study the active ingredient, bimatroprost, specifically for growing lashes. After a clinical study Latisse was approved by the FDA in 2008. In this study patients noticed:
- 25% increase in lash length
- 106% increase in lash fullness/thickness
- 18% increase in lash darkness
The study was done over a 16 week period with documentation and photos every 4 weeks. The results from Latisse are beautiful and consistent. At our Kansas City area Medical Spa, we have carried Latisse for 15 years. It is a favorite with our patients and staff. How to use Latisse
We know most people want to keep their nightly routines as simple as possible, and adding one more step just doesn’t sound fun. But you’re already washing off your makeup(at least you should be) and the application of Latisse literally takes seconds!
Once you’ve removed all makeup, all you have to do is wipe one brush stroke above your lash line on your eyelid. Right where you would apply your eyeliner. That’s it! It takes one drop and one swipe to cover both eyes! Once you make this part of your routine, you will start to see the difference in your lashes in weeks.
Full results are seen after 16 weeks of application, however, there are gradual changes leading up to that time frame. Patients notice increased length and fullness in the first 8 weeks, with the most dramatic results in the second. Latisse should be applied every night for best results, however, if you miss a night you don’t have to makeup for it the next morning, just hop back into your routine the next night for continued change.
What about Lash Extensions? We have many women that have been getting Eyelash Extensions for years, that have added Latisse to their daily regime for healthier, longer and more lashes. This allows for more lashes to be applied and a sturdier base to hold the lash. It’s a win win!
Latisse Side Effects
Side effects from the use of Latisse are typically limited to an initial itching at the application site and darkening of the skin. Latisse increases the vascularity of the skin which can make the skin appear darker. Upon the cessation of the product, the darkness will fade. However, most women do not feel that it is enough to discontinue use. Latisse will continue to work and keep your lashes long and full as long as it’s being used. If stopped, your lashes are expected to return to their normal state.
Documented in the clinical study of Latisse, there were some patients who noticed small color changes to the iris of their eye. This was seen in patients only with hazel eyes and the product was applied directly into the eye. The light brown flecking was seen in less than 1% of patients. We have patients of every eye color that have used Latisse for many years with no problems at all. With a small amount being applied directly to the skin, there should be no worry of it impacting the color of the eye.
