For women who do not naturally have large, shapely breasts, or for those who have lost volume and shape due to pregnancy or weight fluctuations, breast implants have become a popular cosmetic solution. Many breast implant candidates are interested in learning about the benefits of silicone implants.
Silicone implants produce an incredibly natural look and feel for both breast augmentation and reconstruction patients. Plastic surgeon Dr. Matt Chhatre offers silicone cohesive gel breast implants at his Kansas City practice, and can help you decide if silicone or saline implants can achieve the results you desire. Silicone Breast Implants And Improved Safety
Silicone breast implants were first introduced in the early 1960s. Previous generations of breast implants were constructed with thin shells and filled with a low-cohesive gel, making them susceptible to rupture and leaks. Older versions of silicone implants also contributed to higher rates of capsular contracture, a condition in which the immune system isolates the implant by encapsulating it within tightly-woven collagen fibers.
In the early 1990s, silicone implants were pulled from the commercial market due to concerns about their safety, and a series of clinical studies and reviews were conducted. In 2006, the FDA lifted its ban on silicone implants and approved new models with improved safety features. The current fifth generation of silicone implants have sturdier shells and are filled with a thicker cohesive gel that does not leak if the shell is compromised. The FDA approved silicone implants for breast reconstruction patients of any age, and for breast augmentation patients 22 years and older.
Natrelle® Cohesive Gel Breast Implants
Dr. Chhatre is proud to offer advanced Natrelle® silicone gel breast implants. These implants offer a number of benefits to patients, including:
- Natrelle® silicone gel-filled breast implants meet the rigorous standards required of all medical devices without compromising aesthetics. The Natrelle® gel implants produce an enhanced bustline with a very lifelike appearance and feel.
- Natrelle® cohesive gel is so firm that it remains intact even when an implant is cut in half. This minimizes the risk of the silicone material leaking out of the implant shell.
- Studies show reduced incidents of capsular contracture and rupture. In fact, the rupture rate after 11 years is less than 8 in 100.
Selecting The Right Surgeon
